The oldest town on the Manning

Wingham

The town’s shared front page: the news, the notices, what’s on and who’s who, kept by locals and gathered from every group in town.

Five minutes of history

Supply boats could get no further up the Manning, so in 1844 the government proclaimed a village here, the first on the river. It grew on cedar, then timber and dairy: a municipality by 1889, a railway town by 1913. Central Park still keeps the story, in the 1884 post office, the 1907 School of Arts, the courthouse and the Memorial Town Hall.

Seven hectares of rainforest, two minutes from the shops

Wingham Brush is one of the last stands of subtropical floodplain rainforest in New South Wales: giant Moreton Bay figs, a boardwalk through the canopy, and a colony of grey-headed flying foxes. The local word wingan is often translated as “where bats come to drink”, and they still do.

When something happens

The river comes up, a fire to the west, the power off overnight: a notice raised here shows above every page under the hub, and on every linked site, until it is cleared.

Who keeps this

Volunteers on OurHub, on behalf of every group that has linked under the hub. It is a pilot, not a council service, and the town hub is free and stays that way.
